We make sure that your rolling stock is protected throughout Europe, even when it is leased out to third parties.

As a rail infrastructure company, you are responsible for the safety, reliability and performance of the rail network. Your services ensure that locomotives and other rolling stock can operate safely and on time.

By understanding your specific needs and risks, we make sure that your organisation has the best possible cover and complies with all the relevant national and international legislation.

Metro/underground trains

Metro and underground trains are specially designed for local public transport. We understand these networks and offer customised cover for your fleet, allowing you to focus on delivering a safe and reliable service for your passengers.

Trams

We use our experience and knowledge of local public transport systems to deliver customised insurance solutions for your fleet. We ensure your trams have the best cover and help keep your tram lines running smoothly.

Wagons

Wagons are a vital part of a safe, efficient and environmentally-friendly goods transport system. Whether you operate open or covered wagons, tank wagons or container wagons, with us, your rolling stock is in safe hands.

Maintenance machines/road-rail vehicles

Maintenance machines and road-rail vehicles play an essential role in keeping the rail network in good repair and running smoothly. With our customised cover, we make sure they’re always ready when you need them.

Rolling-stock insurance

Our all-risks insurance protects your rolling stock in case of damage caused by unforeseen events.

Unlike a standard comprehensive insurance policy which only covers you for damage resulting from specific risks, our all-risks policy automatically covers you for any damage that the policy does not explicitly omit.

The sum insured depends on the type of rolling stock and its value. Likewise, the premium depends on factors such as the type of rolling stock and equipment, as well as its age, location and use, and how much excess you’re willing to pay.

All-risks rolling-stock insurance is especially important for companies and operators that rely heavily on their rolling stock and equipment, and therefore need to minimise the financial risks associated with damage and downtimes. In the case of an insured loss, the policy will cover any repair or repurchasing costs as well as any expenses resulting from contingency measures, helping you get your operations back up-and-running again as quickly as possible.

Public liability insurance

Rail operators within the European Union usually need to apply for a licence in order to offer their services. The requirements for obtaining these licences are set out in Directive 2012/34/EU of the European Parliament and Council, dated 21 November 2012, on the establishment of a single European railway area.

One licencing prerequisite is that companies must show proof of sufficient public liability insurance cover for any damage or injury to third parties resulting from their rail network operations. The minimum coverage requirements for public liability insurance are defined in the directive and are based on several factors, including the type of rail operations (passenger or freight transport), the length of the rail network and the volume of passengers and goods transported.

It is important to bear in mind that the public liability insurance requirements for rail operators differ from one EU country to the next. Companies therefore need to check the specific legislation in their country and ensure that they have all the necessary licences and insurance cover in place for their services.

Carrier liability insurance

This specialist liability insurance cover is vital for freight rail operating companies because they are ultimately liable for any damage caused to the goods in transit. These policies must comply with all applicable national and international legislation governing the transportation of goods and must also provide Europe-wide coverage.

Carrier liability insurance typically includes cover for claims resulting from the loss of (or damage to) goods in transit. It also covers claims arising from any delays or failure to fulfil goods transport operations. What’s more, there is an option to include cover for delivery or packing errors.

It is important to bear in mind that the exact terms and conditions and scope of coverage for carrier liability insurance can vary depending on the insurer and type of transportation. Operating companies therefore need to check that their policy offers Europe-wide coverage and complies with all relevant national and international legislation governing the transportation of goods.

Other insurance options

In addition to rolling-stock insurance, public liability insurance and carrier liability insurance, we also offer a series of insurance products that have been specially designed for companies in the railway sector.

These include:

  • Legal expenses insurance: this cover offers protection against the costs of any legal proceedings arising from a breach of obligations or criminal offence.
  • D&O (Directors & Officers) insurance: this cover protects senior management staff and decision-makers within an organisation against liability claims resulting from their professional activities.
  • Specialist/country-specific insurance solutions: some countries require rail operators to meet specific insurance requirements, including those governed by law. In this case, we can provide additional cover in line with local legislation.
Needs-based analysis

Our first step is always to conduct a detailed needs-based analysis. This enables us to identify and assess the specific risks faced by your organisation and determine how significant these are.

Operating risks may be seen as any internal or external events where the likelihood of occurrence or impact is unknown. As a specialist insurance broker, our job is to minimise, and where possible prevent, any damaging impacts from such events on your business.

With your help, we therefore take an in-depth look at your operations and identify the exact risks you face. Armed with this information, we can then develop a solution to protect your assets, finances and operations against any damaging impacts from internal or external events. Of course, the nature of your business operations plays a key role in this process. The risks encountered by local public transport operators are, for instance, vastly different from those faced by long-distance freight transport operators.

Europe-wide approach

In our increasingly interconnected world, it is vital to look beyond your own national boundaries. If your locomotives, freight or passengers travel over the border into Switzerland, say, they will be subject to different legislation than those trains bound for Poland or France. Different legislation often stipulates different coverage limits, something which will have knock-on effects for your risk management strategy and insurance cover.

As a specialist broker with Europe-wide expertise, we’re here to make sure your business is protected both at home and abroad.

Company-specific risks

To develop an effective risk management strategy, we first need to identify and analyse the exact risks faced by your company.

This targeted assessment of your company’s specific risk profile looks at both your actual organisation as well as its particular field of operations, It also seeks to identify the complex balance between risks and threats on one side and mitigation strategies and insurance cover on the other.

We then work together with you to develop the best possible solution for your company that offers the protection you need against any potential risks.

Customised insurance solutions

We believe that every company is unique and deserves a customised insurance product that guarantees the best possible protection. If you entrust your cover with us, we’ll develop an individual policy that is specially designed for companies in the railway sector and tailored to your specific needs and requirements.

Our rail insurance experts will liaise closely with you to gain an in-depth picture of your operational processes, risks and insurance requirements. We’ll then use this information to develop specialist insurance solutions that are as unique as your organisation, so you can rest assured that your cover gives you complete and comprehensive protection.

We understand that as a rail operator your insurance requirements are highly complex. That’s why our highly qualified experts are all specialists in their field with many years‘ experience developing insurance solutions for the rail sector. We pride ourselves on offering customised cover that guarantees you the best possible protection against the specific industry risks you face.

Policy management

Our policy management services include monitoring, documentation and financial administration.

If required, our expert team will oversee and administer all your policies for you, making sure that they are always up to date and, more importantly, a good fit for your specific requirements. For instance, they will regularly check your policy terms and update these as necessary, so you can relax safe in the knowledge that you always have the best possible protection.

What’s more, we maintain secure electronic records for all your insurance policies, allowing you to access your policy documentation whenever you need and verify the status of your insurance cover.

Claims management

Our claims management support is a central component of the service we offer our clients. We’re at your side every step of the way, from the initial claims report right through to the final settlement.

Our rail insurance experts have many years of claims-handling experience and are well versed in the complex processes involved. As a result, they are well placed to help you submit your claims quickly and effectively and to co-ordinate any necessary actions.

In the case of rolling-stock insurance claims in particular, we will arrange for experts to establish the cause of the damage and submit comprehensive documentary evidence. We will also make sure that all the necessary steps are taken to resolve your claim and support you right through the process.

To ensure your claims are resolved quickly and efficiently, we always liaise closely with the insurance providers involved. You can rely on us to do everything in our power to settle your claims as rapidly as possible and help you get your operations back on track.
